OCTOBER 2, FRIDAY, 7:00 pm
Full Moon Hike

Join Dawn Osborne on a hike by the full moonlight and listen for owls, beavers and other nocturnal critters.

 

OCTOBER 5, MONDAY, 5-7 pm
Canoeing Ford Pond at Dusk

Nothing is more relaxing than the serenity of Ford Pond at dusk. Beavers play and slap their tails while various species of waterfowl circle overhead before touching down on the still water. Join Audubon Volunteer Ed Thorney for an evening of canoeing as he tries to catch a glimpse of wildlife not normally seen by walking the trails. No canoeing experience is necessary, as Ed will provide you with the skills needed to maneuver efficiently around the pond. Life jackets will be provided and must be worn at all times while in the canoe. This program is limited to 15 participants and registration is required by contacting the Center.

All bird feeders and bird seed will be on sale. Stock up for winter!

 

OCTOBER 10, SATURDAY, 10-11 am
Audubon Pollywogs- Fall Leaves

This pre-K program for 3 & 4 year olds and a parent has been quite popular over the years and now it's back!  Join Environmental Education Intern Ashley Brant for a short nature lesson on fall leaves, including a fun activity, craft, story and snack! Registration is required. Fee: $10 per parent/child pair ($3 each additional child.)

 

OCTOBER 11, SUNDAY, 2:00 pm
Children’s Book Reading and Signing
Age: Families with young children

Marianne Berkes, author of several children’s books including Marsh Morning, Marsh Music and Over in the Ocean: In a Coral Reef, will be in the Sharon Audubon Center Nature Store reading one or two of her books and conducting an interactive program at 2:00pm, followed by a book-signing session. Call Dawn at the Center two weeks in advance to reserve book(s). Regular program fees apply plus cost of the book(s). If you have young children, you don’t want to miss this special event!

OCTOBER 16 & 17, FRI. & SAT. 6:30-8:00 pm
Enchanted Forest CANCELLED DUE TO UNFAVORABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS
Age: Families with young children (preK-2nd grade)
Admission: $4.00 Adults, $4.00 Children

Raccoons, skunks and foxes, OH MY! No need to fear these critters at the Enchanted Forest. Guided groups will meet these friendly costumed animal characters and some more of their friends along the trail and hear how the animals live their lives on the Audubon grounds. After the tour, which lasts approximately 45 minutes, participants can enjoy a cup of hot chocolate inside the Center building before taking a hayride back to the parking area. This non-scary program is ideal for children up to 8 years old and their families.Tours begin every 10-15 minutes between the hours of 6:30 and 8:00pm Participants should bring an extra flashlight if available. *Adult volunteers are needed for this event! Please contact Wendy at the Center if you are interested in being a tour guide or a costumed character. If we do not have enough helpers, the event will be held on Friday evening ONLY. Please call the Center the week of the event to find out if it will be running both nights.

OCTOBER 18, SUNDAY, 9:00am-4:00pm
Fall Colors Paddling Trip on the Upper Housatonic
CANCELLED DUE TO UNFAVORABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS
Join Art Gingert, former HAS Field Trip Chairman, avid kayaker and outdoor photographer/naturalist for an adventurous day of river paddling on the beautiful upper reaches of the Housatonic River, from Sheffield MA to Bartholomew’s Cobble in Ashley Falls. This section of the river offers many meanders, scenic vistas of the Mount Riga Plateau, and is a lovely riparian corridor lined with stately silver maples. Current is slow, Class 1, with some riffles but no rapids. PFDs (life vests) are required, and no small children on this trip, please. Kayaks or canoes are welcome, and participants are limited to 14 in number. We will meet in Sheffield at 9AM, at our river put-in, organize gear and set up the shuttle with cars waiting for us at the take-out at trip’s end. Registration is required.

 

OCTOBER 25, SUNDAY, 12-3 pm
Audubon Kids’ Day
Age: Families with young children
Admission: $7.00 per carload

Calling all kids, parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles! Audubon Kids’ Day is a great way to spend an autumn afternoon together having fun in the outdoors. Haywagon rides, a haybale maze, cool kids’ crafts and new fun games are just part of the fun! Children who try out the games receive a special key that allows them access to the treasure chest, filled with lots of fun toys! Great food, such as hamburgers and hot dogs, pumpkin pie and candy apples are available as well. There’s so much to do in so little time! Children are encouraged to come in costume and join in the costume parade led by a real marching band! Tell all your friends, and carpool...admission is only $7.00 per carload!  RAIN OR SHINE

 

OCTOBER 31, SATURDAY, 10-11 am
Audubon Pollywogs- Pumpkins

This pre-K program for 3 & 4 year olds and a parent has been quite popular over the years and now it's back!  Join Environmental Education Intern Ashley Brant for a short nature lesson on pumpkins, including a fun activity, craft, story and snack! Registration is required. Fee: $10 per parent/child pair ($3 each additional child.) Participants are encouraged to come in their Halloween Costumes!
